Electrical Safety During Storms

Weather and storms can tamper with the electricity we are so used to having. Unfortunately, there is not much a homeowner can do when it comes to preventing weather related problems. There are few things more powerful than mother nature. Sometimes your power may flicker, other times it may go out entirely. In either circumstance it is essential to remain calm. If your lights go out check to see if your neighbors still have power. If they do, it is likely the problem is inside your home. Unplug all appliances with electric components, like microwaves, televisions, and computers. This will prevent damage from voltage surges when the electricity is restored. You will then need to check your main fuses or circuit breakers to see if they have blown. Sometimes restoring your electricity could be as simple as replacing a fuse. Check out more helpful tips below:
  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed during the time that the power is out to keep food fresh.
  • If your power fails during the summer, air conditioners should be turned off and not turned on again until several minutes after the power is restored.
  • In an extended power outage, unplug everything in the home and turn off the breakers. You may want to leave a single light circuit on as a notification of when the power is back on.
  • Contact your energy supplier.
